Critical Incidents & Trauma Training

Critical Incidents Stress & Trauma

First responders cannot avoid critical incidents in their day-to-day work, but they can manage the stress created by a traumatic incident. Trainees will learn the possible effects a critical incident can have on an individual’s psychological well-being. They will explore various types of critical incidents; the signs and symptoms that may follow; and strategies for dealing with the resulting thoughts and emotions. The importance of early intervention, the critical incident debriefing process, and its value as a post-crisis tool to enhance officer resilience will also be described.

Post-traumatic Growth

Post-traumatic growth is both the outcome and the process used to cope with traumatic events. Dr. Pytal developed this course to help first responders understand post-traumatic growth and how to achieve it. She provides participants with the specific tools needed to support the healing process after experiencing trauma.

How Trauma Changes People

Trauma can dramatically impact a person physically and mentally. This session will focus on the short- and long-term effects trauma can have on the body and the mind and provide strategies to address these changes. The importance of early intervention and post-traumatic growth will also be explored, and participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences in a group discussion.

Improving Sleep After Trauma

Traumatic stress can frequently lead to sleep problems. This interactive workshop will identify common sleep difficulties that occur after a traumatic event and emphasize practical strategies and resources for improving the quality and quantity of sleep. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their personal experiences.
